At some point we all have an idea of what we want our lives to be especially when we finish high school. We choose the course that we are most passionate about when we head on to tertiary institutions and if not sometimes our parents even help us by choosing the right course for us which sometimes is not really something you should consider as you will be attending the course and not your parents.

However after one graduates we never really know what to expect on the other side of the real world and they are right when they say life starts after school because you are an adult and are expected to be of some use to your community and make a living to sustain not only yourself but your family as well.

Here are a few things that I have learned throughout my journey of trying to find a job withl a healthy working environment which actually allows me to grow and gain new skills.

1. Put Yourself Out There

When it comes to trying to find a job you need to make sure you gain experience in the type of profession you want to venture in, which is where internships come in and most of the time some internships don’t pay that much or at all but you need to gain skills, a salary should not really be one of your concerns at the beginning since you are starting out in career, but also do not worry yourself too much as some internships compensate you for the work that you do.

2. Have A Plan To Get Income

One thing that you can best do for yourself is have a side hustle or even get a job on the side that you have skills in to get an extra income. For instance, when I was unemployed, I created employment for myself as a nail technician, makeup artist and would make posters or flyers for businesses here and there and worked as a freelance writer. Furthermore, this gives you a sense of individuality because at times we can become a bit of a burden to our parents or guardians and this l gives you a great start where by you can move out of your parents home and rent out a place of your own where you can truly be yourself and learn more about yourself and work on your self development.

3. Be Creative

Being creative sometimes is one of the hardest things to do and we don’t talk much about this because you literally have to think out of the box about new ways of doing certain things that improve your life and that of other people around you, with the set of skills that you have. Being a creative myself I would always try to expose myself to new music, try out things out of my comfort zone, journal my thoughts, meet new people, listen to various podcasts, watch new shows, movies, read books or just allow myself to experience new things to get motivated enough to brainstorm ideas.

4. Attend Events

A wise man once said networking is not just connecting people but it’s “networthing’. While you are job hunting it’s always important to attend events that will allow you to network with different people especially those related to having the same interests as you. That is where you can get mentors and get to know people in general that you can learn from. In addition, by doing this you can get invited to work on certain projects with the people that you meet pertaining on the skills that you have, and who knows they might even just learn a thing or two from you.

5. Wake Up Earlier

They say the early bird catches the worm and this can apply to you waking up early. Waking up early in the morning allows you to be more energetic and refreshed during the day and less likely to be lazy.

6. Clean Up Your Space

Have you noticed that when your space is not in order or organized you don’t function properly? Or is it just me? It can however be tricky sometimes but, try as much as possible to keep your environment clean as cleanliness is closer to Godliness.

7. Take Care Of Your Mental and Physical Well-being

Seeing other people having jobs and sometimes the constant comparison that comes from parents or guardians can really put you off, which is one of the reasons why I decided to get my own place. I understand that our parents want the best for us but sometimes they do it unknowingly and deep down it hurts us as individuals and makes one feel not worthy enough.

Another thing is to try to take care of your hygiene and physical appearance. I bet most of you are familiar with the saying ‘don’t look like your problems and you know what it’s true plus when you feel good you look good. And while you put in some effort in how you look make sure to get some exercise at home even if it’s just having a walk, jogging, dancing or going to the gym if you can afford it and stay active.

To everyone that is still out there looking for a job do not give up keep sending those emails and applications. A job that is meant for you will reach you eventually and remember to always put your trust and faith in God for he already had plans for you even before you were born. However, in the meantime as you wait use the talents that God has given you for you lack nothing and you are worth everything.
