I am not my body,

Which you scrutinize

And see faults in.

I am not my skin,

Which you label

As a brand of shame.

I am not my hair,

Which you think needs

To be adjusted;

To look modest.

I am not your expectations,

Which you foresee me

To be at the end of the day.

I am rather

An authentic soul,

That resides merely

Within a costume.

  1. True that, I agree with Kendi. The poem is indeed magnificent and relatable. I like how it makes me ponder the nature of who I am.

    I know for sure I’m the number one suspect when it comes to judging people by their exterior. Although I tell myself everyday not to judge a book by its cover, it’s hard because my brain does this unconsciously. I think this is the same for most people. Summing up the appearance of things is an evolutionary trait ingrained in us from birth. It helps us survive but unfortunately it clouds our vision when it comes to seeing who exactly we are dealing with. That’s why I think it’s good to be mindful whenever we’re doing this, so that we can take actions to break the preconceptions we form of people

    1. I can’t agree with you more. The way we think sometimes when meeting people is just not acceptale. Sometimes were always to quick to judge and I believe that sometimes our thoughts do it for us and the only way to get rid of this ridiculous mindset is to reset and develop a new way of thinking….
